Session 2: Technology facilitation: experiences and the way forward

Some countries in the Asia and the Pacific have turned from recipients to major source of technology innovation and promoting technology facilitation themselves, while many developing countries still struggle with gap in technology capacity. The Report of the Secretary-General recommends examinations of needs, gaps and achievements in technology facilitation (Recommendation 1. A/68/310). In line with the recommendation, this session intends to highlight on-going initiatives related to crosscountry technology facilitation and lessons learnt in light of assessment of needs, gaps and achievements, as well as prospects for coordination with other initiatives.

Questions in this session include;
• Drawing from national experiences in technology facilitation, what are the most important enabling conditions and constraints (such as intellectual property rights, scientific infrastructure, human capital, favourable market conditions, investment climate, etc.)?And what are the lessons for technology facilitation?
• How to identify and ensure that the needs of beneficiaries and the source of technologies are matched?
• What are the motivation and challenges in expanding the scope of technology facilitation beyond national level and up-scaling such initiatives to regional/international level?
