ESBN EGM: Parameters for Mapping under the Maritime Sector Strategies for Augmenting Tsunami Monitoring Programme
The EGM will bring together Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency
(BMKG), ESCAP Sustainable Business Network (ESBN) members, the project Steering Committee and other stake holders to see how our infrastructure (ships &shipping lanes, platforms, undersea cables) will align between tsunami generation hotspots and the most vulnerable coastlines. Mapping this out may show us gaps that our project and Government machineries do not provide coverage for. Countries that are vulnerable to tsunamis have extensively mapped their coastal regions in preparation for future tsunami flooding (inundation) needed for delineation of evacuation routes and long-term planning in vulnerable coastal communities. Yet, the current status of mapping for tsunami reveals a number of significant gaps.
Noting the above, it is proposed to build on such efforts with overlays not only of tsunami generation hotspots but also mapping out coastal areas most at risk of tsunami to particular hotspots. Overlaying all this would be current shipping routes and current locations of ships that are part of the project. Mapping overlays will also cover stationary maritime platforms, and where undersea cables are laid and where sensors are attached. Under the project, these maritime infrastructure are needed to both augment and build-in redundancy to existing tsunami warning systems, as well as create a sufficiently dense network.
Here, such information is critical for (countries such as Indonesia and Japan) in predicting when and how tsunamis will impact coastlines. Further, with undersea cables, ships and stationary platforms ultimately generating data, can mapping for the project also attain near real-time monitoring?
With such in mind, the EGM will also invite a specialist from Global Fishing Watch to share how they are able to generate a map that track fishing vessels in near real-time. It will also share a special presentation by Mr. Nathan Wood, Supervisory Research Geographer, Western Geographic Science Center, U.S. Geological Survey, on “Pedestrian evacuation modeling”.
