ESCAP Executive Secretary and ASEAN Secretary-General discuss collaboration on ASEAN-UN plan of action
On 1 February, ESCAP Executive Secretary Armida Alisjahbana held a bilateral meeting with ASEAN Secretary-General H.E. Dato Lim Jock Hoi in Jakarta. The two discussed further strengthening coordination to implement priority areas under the economic and socio-cultural cooperation pillars, as well as the cross-sectoral section outlined in the ASEAN-UN Plan Of Action (2016-2020).
Ms. Alisjahbana thanked the Secretary-General for the ASEAN Secretariat’s strong support on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the region. Over the past years, ESCAP and ASEAN have worked together to identify complementarities between the ASEAN Community Vision 2025 and the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This has resulted in the ASEAN Leaders’ endorsement of the complementarities report containing new seven flagship initiatives including the ASEAN Centre for Sustainable Development Studies and Dialogue. The report was jointly prepared and supported by ESCAP, ASEAN, and the Government of Thailand
During the meeting, the Executive Secretary proposed several areas for increased and strengthened partnership between ESCAP and ASEAN such as regional energy connectivity and the development of energy transition policy roadmaps; a regional plan of action on ageing to ensure no one is left behind; and scaling up cooperation on disaster risk reduction and building resilience to slow-onset disasters such as drought. Ms. Alisjahbana also took the opportunity to invite the Secretary-General to the High-Level Brainstorming Dialogue on Enhancing Complementarities in March and the 75th session of the Commission in May.
